ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering
The ICAR-Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering is a flagship institute under Indian Council of Agricultural Research to provide engineering solutions for overall prosperity and sustainability of farming systems. The institute came into existence on February 15, 1976 with a general mandate to conduct research on agricultural mechanisation, post-harvest food processing, and energy management in agriculture and build capacity of appropriate stakeholders leading to effective management of farming operations, increased productivity, conservation of resources, reduction in drudgery, prevention of losses, generation of employment and improvement in the lives of farming and allied community. The mandate is fulfilled by providing national and international leadership by means of independent and coordinated research through network of research centers established all over the country that results in developing commodity and location specific technologies needed by farmers and manufacturers. Transfer of agricultural engineering technology and education are also important activities of the institute.
In the forty years of its existence the institute has brought about many changes in the agricultural systems through different interventions of engineering technologies. The efforts have resulted into about 250 technologies including research prototypes, processes, software and protocols besides many publications in the form of research papers, popular articles, technical bulletins, books etc. The activities of the institute are conducted through five research divisions, one Centre of excellence, four All India Coordinated Research Projects and Two Consortia Research Platforms. Besides, one arm of the institute located at Coimbatore also contributes in research and extension activities. The institute has adequate laboratory facilities and excellent infrastructure for support of all its endeavours – 93 hectare land, prototype fabrication workshops, state of the art library, guesthouses, hostels, auditorium and around 350 qualified and trained personnel. Currently, 77 institute funded and six externally funded projects are operating to find solutions to the problems related to precision farming, horticultural mechanization, conservation agriculture, postharvest loss prevention and value addition, energy for and from agriculture, water management, equipment production technology and climate resilience in agriculture.
The developed technologies are transferred through licensing to private and public sector enterprises. The extension activities are carried out mainly through agricultural technology information centre and Krishi Vigyan Kendra, with inputs from various divisions. Linkages with different institutes, international, central and state government agencies, NGOs and industries also provide impetus to the spread of technologies. Testing of agricultural machineries, one of major activities of institute also helps liaising with the agricultural machinery manufacturers.
As an outreach center of ICAR-Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, ICAR-CIAE is providing state of the art post graduate education in two major fields of Farm Machinery and Power and Agricultural Process Engineering. Currently seventeen students are pursuing their education leading to doctoral degree. The institute has open door policy for the stakeholders and visits to institute for specific or general knowledge are always welcome. Staff takes active part in programme like ‘Mera Gaon Mera Gaurav’ to fulfill social responsibilities of the institute.
It is heartening to present a restructured website of ICAR-CIAE. All efforts have been made to provide every information about the institute that different types of visitors may be interested in. This website also consists of a link to information portal on agricultural engineering technologies available across public and private domain. I am sure that the website would be useful and would able to reflect upon the excellent services being provided by the ICAR-CIAE. In our endeavour for excellence there is always a scope for improvement and we are ready to accept constructive criticism and valuable suggestions.
