Farmers have been asked to sell small onions in June since the price is expected to increase during that time.

The Domestic and Export Market Intelligence Cell at the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University has urged farmers to store small onions as the prevailing price – Rs. 32 to Rs. 35 a kg – is expected to increase.

The forecast was made based on studying the price prevailing for the last 15 years in Dindigul market.

The best quality small onion is expected to go up to Rs. 40 a kg. The increase in price will cover the storage cost and interest put together.

At present, small onions from Tirupur, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni, and Perambalur districts, sown in Thai and Masi were arriving at the market.

Of this, 60 per cent are cultivated through seeds and the quality of the produce is also good.

The shelf life of onion produced by cultivation through seeds is less than that of cultivation through bulbs.
