PAU Organizes Training Programme for ‘Apni Mandi’ Farmers

The Punjab Horticultural Postharvest Technology Centre, P.A.U. Ludhiana organized a training programme on postharvest management and marketing of fruits and vegetables for Apni Mandi farmers of Fatehgarh Sahib and Kharar on 27-2-2018. About 30 farmers attended the training programme. The farmers were made aware of the role of grading, packaging and storage of fruits and vegetables for profitable marketing. Dr BVC Mahajan, Director of the Centre informed that concept of Apni Mandi was initiated by Punjab Mandi Board with a vision to improve the livelihood of small farmers around cities. Dr Mahajan mentioned that horticultural crops are highly perishable in nature and spoil within short period after harvest. This model helps in maintaining good relationship between farmers and consumers by eliminating middleman. Moreover, the farmers can earn better profit of their valuable produce as compared to wholesale market.  Dr Mahesh Kumar discussed in detail about the drying technology for vegetables and explained that few vegetables such as methi, carrot, bittergourd etc can be successfully dried and preserved for more than six months. Dr Ritu Tandon explained about safe use of pesticides on fruits and vegetables. The farmers were satisfied with the exposure provided at the center.
