The College of Home Science, Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), celebrated the festival of Lohri in  the village Sarabha, district Ludhiana under Rural Agricultural Work Experience  (RAWE) programme. The programme was dedicated to the girl child under the theme “Dhiyan di Lohri.” Bonfire was lit at the entrance of the venue and visitors were welcomed by the students. Nearly 100 women and children attended this programme, coordinated by Department of Extension Education and Communication Management, PAU.

Dr Sukhjit Kaur, Professor, explained the significance of celebrating lohri for the girl child in view of the declining sex ratio in the Punjab state. She said, “Birth of girl is also a matter of celebration as she is the one, who sustains our society.” She also stressed on the audience to pledge for making their village free from female feticide and dowry as these are curse for the society. Two students recited the poem ‘Lohri,’ of the poet Sh Gurbhajan Gill and ‘Anjami dhi di pukar’ by Simrat Gagan. The poems were appreciated by the audience. The main attraction of the programme was the skit enacted by the students, in which they highlighted the achievements of girls in different walks of life.

Later, gifts were distributed among girls of less than one year of age. Dr Sukhdeep Kaur, Assistant Professor, thanked the villagers and the students for their support and cooperation in making the programme a success.
