Kargil Pvt. Ltd., to invest over Rs. 250 crore on the project

Kargil Pvt. Ltd., a multinational company, is setting up a maize processing unit at Belludi, a village in Harihar taluk, at a cost of over Rs. 450 crore.

Disclosing this at a press conference here on Saturday, S.S. Pattanashetty, Deputy Commissioner, said that the company had purchased 50 acres of land directly from farmers in Belludi and its executives distributed the value of land to owners on August 30. The company, while distributing the value to farmers through a few experts, had also educated the farmers about investing the money they had secured by selling their land in the right way so as to earn a certain fixed revenue every month, Mr. Pattanashetty said.

He said that the company had purchased the land from 28 farmers at a cost of Rs.22.5 lakh an acre. The company proposed to produce starch, among many other products, from maize. Once the processing unit got established, about 200 youths were likely to get employed in it, besides another 100 people getting indirect employment. Stating that the company had set up its units in more than 20 countries, he said that the Belludi unit might start functioning in another one year. The company would be investing over Rs. 450 crore, apart from the cost of the land. As the company had purchased the land directly from farmers, the district administration had no role to play in it. He said that he was present at a special meeting organised by the company to educate farmers about judicious investment of money. Davangere was a prominent maize-growing district in the State. For the past many years, over 2 lakh tonnes of maize was being produced in the district. There was a proposal to set up maize processing unit about five years ago, which the then BJP government had shifted to Shimoga, at the behest of the then Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, he said.
