TIRUPATI: Jain Irrigation Systems Limited (JISL) eyes the mango-rich Chittoor district for expanding its production and processing base in the country. The company already has a world-class fruit-processing facility at Chittoor, the other one being at Jalgaon.

The company, which markets the processed fruit juice under the brand name ‘Farm Fresh’, uses its Chittoor plant for processing a range of fruits, of which mango holds the lion’s share. The company, which has already gained a firm foothold in the agricultural landscape by providing farm and irrigation equipment, planting material, efficient fertilizer management system and also extends vital agronomical advice to the farmers, also produces dehydrated onion and vegetables products, aseptic fruit purees, pulps & concentrates and exports them across the world.

Addressing mediapersons at the ISO 9001 and HACCP-certified plant in Chittoor on Thursday, the company’s senior vice-president Sunil Deshpande saw a two-fold rise in the demand for fruit purees and concentrates in the local market. The company had set up an IQF plant for production of deep frozen fruits, vegetables, pulps and concentrates, besides adding new products to its portfolio such as tomato, banana and pomegranate. He said the delicious mango varieties like Alphonso, Kesar, Dasheri, Chausa etc. would be processed in larger quantities in tune with the growing demand for fruits in domestic markets and also the rise in investment in the retail sector. Mr.Deshpande pointed out that his company was currently processing in excess of 75000 metric tonnes of mangoes, banana, pomegranates, papaya, tomato and guava every year, almost half of which was being sold in the global market.
