The ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Ludhiana organized an “Interface Meet of KVKs and State Animal Husbandry Department of Punjab” on the theme of “Livestock Entrepreneurship for Doubling Farmer’s Income” at its campus today.
Dr. Shiv Prasad Kimothi, Assistant Director General (Coordination), Chief Guest, stressed on achieving the desired goals only through the integration of various farming systems. He urged to popularize the integrated farming system for improving the farmers’ income. He also urged the farmers for fully harnessing the ICT tools like WhatsApp, Voice Messages, Facebook, etc., so as to reach the unreached farmers effectively and efficiently.
Dr. Inderjeet, Director, Animal Husbandry, Government of Punjab, Guest of Honor, said presently, the livestock sector’s contribution in total Agricultural GDP of Punjab is only 36% which needs to be raised up to 50% by the collaborative efforts.
Dr. H.K. Verma, DEE, GADVASU, Ludhiana briefed about the various livestock entrepreneurship’s avenues to double-up the farmer’s income. He also underlined about the various services that are being provided by the GADVASU in the form of improved germplasm of Sahiwal Cows, Murrah Buffaloes, Beetal Goats, Yorkshire Pigs, Poultry and capacity building of farmers, especially, to the farm women at free of cost.
Earlier, Dr. Rajbir Singh, Director, ICAR- ATARI, Zone-I, Ludhiana accentuated for working in synergic mode for developing the climate resilient and nutri-smart villages. The Director also urged for identifying such districts of Punjab that have certain specialty with regard to fodder, livestock resources, etc., for converting them into hubs.
A technical bulletin entitled “Pig Farming: Promising Agri-Business of Punjab” was also released during the occasion.
The event registered a total participation by more than 85 delegates including Deputy Directors (AH), Veterinary Officers and Subject Matter Specialists of KVKs and scientists from GADVASU, Ludhiana, & NBAIGR, Karnal.
