Women self-help group members were given the right platform to display their products at the month-long exhibition organised by the District Supply and Marketing Society (DSMS) at the DSMS grounds near the New bus stand here on Saturday.

The expo has 30 stalls displaying a wide range of goods. Timed with the festival season between Christmas and Pongal, the exhibition aims at providing marketing avenues to products made by the women self help groups, says S. Sathyaseelan, secretary of the DSMS.

Fur toys, nursery and ornamental plants, sanitary napkins, bangles, mouth-watering Chettinad snacks, imitation jewellery, terracotta toys and bio manure are among the items that have found a place at the expo. “The stall with the ‘kaalan' dishes – kaalan soup, kaalan pagoda - are bound to attract visitors.

The exhibition testifies to economic support, by means of loans and other livelihood assistance, being extended to the women SHGs.

A particular case in point is the special loans being sanctioned to reformed bootleggers of Kallukudiyiruppu village near Arimalam. “These women have been producing beautiful horticultural nurseries which have a growing demand in several parts of the state,” says Mr. Sathyaseelan.

He explained the cluster of readymade garments formed in Tiruvarankulam block who made attractive garments to suit the needs of college girls and children.

Special discount was available on bulk order by institutions and individuals, he added.

Collector B. Maheswari inaugurated the exhibition which is open daily from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. till January 22. She went around various stalls and enquired about the marketing avenues for their products.
