Marathwada region of Maharashtra suffered from the epidemic outbreak of white grub since last 2 to 3 years. In Marathwada there was a heavy drought prone situation from last 2 to 3 years resulting into the heavy outbreak of minor pest that is White grub in all the districts namely Nanded, Hingoli, Parbhani, Aurangabad, Jalna, Beed, Latur and Osmanabad. Out of 8 districts Nanded, Parbhani, Beed, Jalna, and Hingoli districts near about 11600 ha area suffered by white grub attack from various villages in both the kharif as well as rabi season. White grub was the only pest resulting into the resowing of kharif as well as rabi crops. In whole Marathwada region there was 70 to 80 % damage of agricultural crops by white grub attack.
In Nanded district being a worker of SSM’s KVK Sagroli as a Scientist Plant Protection surveyed and monitored the white grub attack in Kandhar Loha and Mukhad tahasils and adjoining areas and identified the 10 to 12 villages where white grub damaged the whole crop. To overcome the situation KVK Sagroli has taken the white grub awareness and management campaigns in the various villages during the month of May and June 2016 aware the farmers regarding the threat of white grub to kharif 2016 season.They get benefited by it.
Reasons of outbreakProlonged dry spells during two intermittent rains.Availability of host plants like Neem, Ber and Bhabul.Heavy hailstorm during January and February months resulting into the premature adult emergence resulting into a overlapping generations in Aurangabad, Jalna and adjoining area.Undecomposed application of FYM.
Control measuresDeep ploughing of land to expose the pupae to sunlight.Soil application of Phorate 10 % @ 25 Kg/ha OR Metarrhizium anisopliae @ 10 Kg/haIntegrated use of light traps in the month of late May and June to mass trap the white grub adults to prevent the life cycle.Need based drenching of chloropyriphos 20 % @ 25 ml per 10 liter of water.
