An event has been organized at BR-Hills of Chamarajanagar district on 16th August 2018, to distribute Honey bee colonies to the beneficiaries of ICAR-IIHR-Tribal-Sub-Plan project. There were 35 tribal farmers selected based on the survey, to uplift their livelihood security.
The event was organized by ICAR-IIHR in collaboration with the Vivekananda Girijana Kalyana Kendra (VGKK), BR-Hills. Dr MR Dinesh Director-ICAR-IIHR Presided over the function and Padmashree Dr.H. Sudarshan chairman VGKK was the Chief Guest. While distributing the Bee Colonies, Dr Sudarshan lauded the efforts of ICAR-IIHR in reaching out the tribal people through this unique service oriented programme , where IIHR is giving keen importance to the overall development of tribals , apart from conducting research in horticultural sector.
Dr M.R Dinesh thanked Dr. Sudarshan for his yeoman service in the field of tribal development in BR Hills since many decades. He was hopeful that the Bee colonies will definitely enhance the income of tribal farmers and also contribute to the eco system services of the BR Hills . He also assured many more programmes such as demonstrations on vegetable and ornamental crops, nutritional and livelihood security etc. Besides bee colonies planting materials of tuberose, crosandra and vegetable seed kits were distributed. A technical session on bee keeping was also arranged, where Dr. P.V.R Reddy Principal Scientist(Entomology) explained the basics and benefits of bee keeping .
Dr .B. Narayanaswamy Principal Scientist and Incharge for TSP project, BR Hills highlighted the overall programmes of TSP and welcomed the gathering. Dr. T.M Rao Head Division of ornamental crops explained the technologies available in the Division. Dr H.P Sumangala Sr. Scientist and Dr.Usha Bharathi Sr.Scientist , division of ornamental crops and members of TSP were also present and facilitated. The programme was attended by Mr Arun Kumar coordinator VGKK , all the staff members , about 55 tribal farmers of BR Hills and Kollegal area attended the programme . Dr.R.
