Members of the Krishna Delta Farmers’ Welfare Association (KDFWA) on Sunday opposed the government’s plan to divert water from the Polavaram project to the Rayalaseema region.

Farmers, members of civil society groups, advocates, and representatives of political parties met here to discuss the woes of the farmers. Machilipatnam-based senior lawyer L. Balaji urged the government to cater to the irrigation needs of the farmers of Krishna district on a war-footing. It was decided at the meeting to constitute village-level committees to intensify the agitation against diversion of water to Ralayaseema. In his address, TDP representative Buragadda Srinivas said: “Indiscriminate use of chemicals in aqua ponds is leading to contamination of irrigation sources across eastern Krishna district.” KDFWA member Y. Nagendranath mooted construction of reservoirs in the tail-end areas of irrigation canals.
