MANGALURU: A proposal to set up special agriculture zone (SAZ) on lines with special economic zone is under consideration, deputy commissioner K G Jagadeesha said. There is sufficient demand for locally grown vegetables and flowers abroad and this has spurred the demand to set up a SAZ, DC said adding a committee consisting of agriculture experts, officials, farmer leaders will be set up the committee is expected to submit its report in this regard in next two months.
Chairing a meeting with farmer leaders on Wednesday, DC said the district administration is committed to provide suitable land to set up the SAZ. Incidentally, SAZ is the pet project of the Dakshina Kannada MP Nalin Kumar Kateel who has also committed himself to take up the idea at the highest level in the union government and work for its implementation. The move by district administration to flag this idea with farmers could give impetus to the MPs idea.
Taking note of complaints that hospitals empanelled under the Yashaswini scheme are charging more than the government stipulated rates from patients, DC said he would hold a meeting with managements of empanelled hospitals and give them suitable direction. A district level workshop to disseminate information regarding protection of horticultural crops to farmers will be held at the earliest. One such workshop on yellow disease will be held in Sullia shortly, he said.
On the issue of delay in providing agricultural loans to farmers, DC directed the officials to flag this issue with the lead bank officials. DC also said he will direct officials of the agricultural department to hold similar meetings with farmers at the taluk level as well. A proposal to construct 53 vented dams at a cost of Rs 69 crore to aid agricultural activities in the district and 100 mini vented dams under MGNREGA has been sent to the state government, officials said.
Kempegowda, joint director, agriculture department said the department is renting out agriculture equipment to farmers through Krishi Yantradare centres. A proposal has been sent to the state government to set up one such centre for every three gram panchayats, he said. Land has been transferred to agriculture department to construct a new building for raitha samparka Kendra at Moodbidri and the Kendra will become a reality in the next one year.
