Helps in increasing private income, besides providing employment: Collector
Thanjavur: Farmers of Thanjavur district should take to cotton culitvation as a proft making venture, said M.Veera Shanmugha Moni, Thanjavur Collector at Aduthurai near Kumbakonam on Wednesday.
Speaking at a seminar on cotton cultivation organised jointly by the Agriculture department and Tamil Nadu Rice Research Institute (TRRI) affiliated to Tamil Nadu Agriculture University (TNAU) at Aduthurai, he said that instead of earning net profit of Rs.4,000 per acre by cultivating paddy, farmers can earn Rs.10,000 as profit by cultivating cotton on two acres of land.This helps in increasing private income besides providing employment opportunity for labourers as cultivation is done in more area. Expenditure for importing cotton can also be reduced by increasing domestic production.
Both Central and State Governments have been implementing Cotton mini mission for improving cotton cultivation in the country.
He said that in Tamil Nadu, cotton is cultivated on 2.5 lakh hectares.This is only four per cent in the total cultivable area in the state.
