The National Green Tribunal (NGT) has directed the Delhi Chief Secretary to hold a meeting with all the Deputy Commissioners on installation of rainwater harvesting systems in building plots of 100 metres and above.

A Bench headed by NGT chairperson Adarsh Kumar Goel on Tuesday directed the Deputy Commissioners of all districts in the Capital to ensure that “effective mechanisms” are put in place.

“The Chief Secretary of Delhi may convene a meeting of all Deputy Commissioners on the focused issue of implementation of guidelines for installation of rainwater harvesting systems in all buildings where the area is more than 100 square metres, within one month from today [Tuesday],” the Bench said.

The Bench added, “Effective monitoring mechanism may be put in place in a suitable manner.”

The Chief Secretary has also been asked to file an affidavit within two months before the tribunal.

The directions came while the green panel was hearing a plea filed by environmental activist Vikrant Tongad, who had sought directions to the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) to install rainwater harvesting systems at all metro stations.
