Congress members will stage a satyagraha at Anantapur on March 25 to ‘expose the government’s apathy towards the distressed farmers in the Rayalaseema region’, former Speaker and APCC vice-president Nadendla Manohar said on Thursday.

Accompanied by Kurnool DCC president P. Lakshmi Reddy and other leaders, Mr. Manohar visited Obulapuram village in Dhone mandal and interacted with farmers, agricultural labourers and women on drought and acute scarcity of irrigation and drinking water.

The Chandrababu Naidu government failed to provide succour to the distressed farmers who incurred crop losses owing to successive droughts and the agricultural labourers who were migrating to major cities in search of work, he told the media earlier in the Congress office here. He urged Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and his Cabinet colleagues to tour the drought-hit Rayalaseema to gauge the plight of farmers and agricultural workers and take remedial steps. The State Budget lacked emphasis on farmers’ welfare, he said. He flayed the government for proposing to allot 638 acres for an airport at Orvakal in the district at Rs. 1 an acre.
