Coir fair showcases recent developments in the sector

The Coconut Festival 2018 organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) at the Codissia Trade Fair complex drew good crowd on the first day on Saturday. The CII had organised the festival with support from the Coconut Development Board, Coir Board, Asian and Pacific Coconut Community, Indonesia, Indian Council for Agricultural Research and Tamil Nadu Agricultural University.

More than 45 organisations had put up stalls. The Coconut and Coir Boards showcased the technologies and products they had developed and displayed dress materials, mats and other products that could be developed from coconut fibre.

Many an organisation sold virgin coconut oil, ‘neera’, coconut sugar, cosmetic items and a number of food products that could be developed with coconut as the base. There were also industries that displayed machineries used in dehusking and to extract fibre from coconut.

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University too showcased its research and programmes for coconut promotion. A few pesticide and fertilizer companies were present as were banks offering agriculture loan products.

Farmers, mostly coconut cultivators, entrepreneurs, students and members of the public visited the stalls. M. Rajeswaran adnd E. Mohankumar, students, said they were at the fair to see both, machinery and value added products.

Both were from agriculture families, pursued engineering and were looking to set up coconut-based industries. The exhibition was an eye-opener and definitely useful, they added.
