City couple gives bamboo a fillip, use it to make apparels
"The life of a bamboo plant is 80 years and after three years it takes care of itself, it can be harvested every six months, is anti-bacterial, does not require pesticides and grows in all kinds of soil," says Ashish who is otherwise an electrical engineer. "It improves the soil quality and can purify water when planted on the banks of a water body, and absorbs 30% more carbon dioxide than other plants," he adds.
The duo is also creating a new breed of weavers in villages and are imparting training to women to work on handlooms to weave bamboo fabric. "We want to develop centers in villages in Hinganghat, Warud and Kalmeshwar (with another planned in Tadoba) so that women don't have to move away from their homes and can be involved in this process," says Sujata, a textile designer.
