Cimmyt Directors Tour Agri Varsity: Laud Research Activities 01-10-2018

A team from CIMMYT- BISA comprising Director General, Board of Trustees and Directors visited Punjab Agricultural University today. They were apprised of the University’s research activities through an exhibition put up by the various departments. While welcoming the officers, PAU Vice Chancellor, Dr B.S. Dhillon, termed the collaboration for rice stubble management between PAU and CIMMYT- BISA as one of the best partnerships to effectively manage the paddy stubble. Highlighting PAU’s success story of wheat, Dr Navtej Bains, Director of Research pointed the University focus on quality, sustainability and natural resource management. While touring the stubble management machinery on display at the exhibition site, Prof Arun K. Joshi, Managing Director, BISA, termed the institute’s collaboration with PAU as historic, starting right from green revolution that brought impressive results in wheat breeding to present day association targeting conservation agriculture. “With more recent wheat breeding technologies and tools (precision phenotyping and molecular research) we are set to tap more yield potential apart from tackling residue burning and issues related to climate change,” remarked Prof. Joshi. Dr. Balwinder Singh Sidhu, Commissioner Agriculture-cum- Chief Conservator of Soils, Punjab elaborated that the research association between PAU and CIMMYT- BISA has always benefitted the farmers not just across Punjab but the entire country. He urged the two institutes to come up with workable ideas and incubate them into technologies to facilitate progress in the agricultural sector. Director of Extension, PAU, Dr Jaskaran Singh Mahal, ADRs, Heads of Departments and concerned scientists were also present at the occasion.
