A variety of naturally-ripened fruits on display at the three-day mela
The carbide-free mango mela provides a feast to the fruit lovers as farmers from Nakkapalle, K. Kotapadu and Chodavaram brought out a variety of naturally-ripened mangoes to the domestic market.
On Thursday morning, MVP Rythu Bazaar was flooded with buyers as they had an opportunity to stuff their bags with different types of mangoes such as banganapalli , rasalu , suvarna rekha , Gunturu rasalu , gulabi and parya at a reasonable cost.
After receiving an overwhelming response for the State-level mango mela held in Vijayawada last month, the Department of Horticulture flagged off the exhibition-cum-sale here. “The prime focus is on awareness about natural farming, highlighting the demerits of using calcium carbide to ripen fruits and reach out to the domestic market with naturally grown mangoes,” District Collector N. Yuvaraj said after inaugurating the fair. He was accompanied by Visakhapatnam East MLA Velagapudi Ramakrishna Babu.
While there are at least half a dozen varieties of mangoes kept stacked in 20 stalls, visitors can also have a look at the 25 types of mangoes arranged neatly in tiny baskets at the venue. Assistant Director of Horticulture G. Prabhakar Rao gave an overview of the low-cost movable mango-ripening units. He said that platforms such as these would enlighten both farmers and buyers to opt for organic fruits.
Fall in yield
On the decreasing yields, farmer from Chodavaram mandal Nagi Reddy Appa Rao said: “From Rs.10 lakh to Rs.2 lakh, the annual profit has gradually come down post cyclone Hudhud. However, we are devising ways to improve the yield by adopting traditional methods of farming where over 100 varieties of mangoes are grown in 25-acre area at Adduru village. He has been awarded recently at the State-level mango mela held in Vijayawada for introducing ‘pala-parya’ variety to mango lovers.
About 40 tonnes of fruits were unloaded from the trucks for the purpose. The three-day fair, supported by Agricultural Technology Management Agency, also displays mango-based products like jelly and squash and will be open till Saturday at MVP Rythu Bazaar from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m.
