AHMEDABAD/PALANPUR: Gujarat police on Saturday arrested Jayesh Dasrji, a Bharatiya Janata Party worker, in connection with Friday's attack on Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi's car in Dhanera town of Banaskantha district.
Darji is general secretary of BJP Yuva Morch in Banaskantha and also president of Manav Seva Sangh, a local NGO.
Police said it was Darji who threw the stone on Gandhi's SUV when he was returning to the helipad after meeting flood affected people at Dhanera APMC (Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee) on Friday afternoon, smashing its windowpane.
"Darji has been booked under various sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) which include sections 332 (voluntarily causing hurt), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 427 (mischief causing damage)," Banaskantha SP Neeraj Badgujar told TOI. "Darji will be produced in court on Sunday."
Badgujar said the police was also investigating the allegation that three other local BJP workers - Morsinh Rao, Mukesh Thakkar and Dhanera APMC chairman Bhagwandas Pate - were involved in the attack. "Whether the attack on Gandhi was pre-planned or not was also the matter of investigation," he said.
