NAVI MUMBAI: Bigger housing societies have got another month to set up their independent composting system. The solid waste department had earlier given them October 15 deadline and warned that garbage collection will be discontinued after that.

To enforce segregation of waste at source and resolve the pressure on landfill site, the department had asked residential societies that are spread over 3,000 sq m and 5,000 sq m area to set up their own composting units. "If all residential societies ensure to sort waste within their complex, the need for dumping garbage in dumping site could be reduced drastically. Wet waste can be composted and dry waste can be sold off," said the deputy municipal commissioner of solid waste deaprtment, Tushar Pawar.

On account of festive season and also to generate more awareness about the benefits of composting waste independently, the administration decided to give one month extension. "We want maximum participation . From November 15, the administration will consider not collecting waste from big societies," said Pawar.
