The Agriculture Department has initiated steps to promote upland paddy farming in 2,560 hectares this year. The project, to be taken up under the 100-day action plan of the department, involves cultivation of high-yielding varieties of paddy like Vaisakh, Annapoorna, Rohini, Suvarnamodan, Swarnaprabha, Mattatriveni and Jyothi, as well as native rice varieties.

The government has announced an assistance of Rs.10,000 per hectare for farmers interested in the scheme. A press note issued here on Wednesday said the onset of the southwest monsoon could provide conditions favorable for upland paddy cultivation.
