Thiruvananthapuram: Mayor V K Prasanth inaugurated the aerobic bin units in Poojappura Central Prison compound here on Thursday. The units have been installed as part of city corporation's ` 'My city, beautiful city' project under the annual plan.
Mayor V K Prasanth said that the aerobic bin units are not just waste processing centres but also nature friendly recreation places.

The unit comprises five bins to process the waste generated from jail and residential quarters of officials. The installation and beautification have been carried out by corporation following a request received from jail authorities regarding processing of bio-waste.

"We already have a vermi-compost unit and bio-digester. We were badly in need of more units to process the increasing amount of waste. Besides a major share of 69 acres of the campus is under cultivation and we needed manure. Aerobic bins provided the ideal solution," said Santosh S, superintendent, Poojappura Central Prison.

The city corporation will provide all technical assistance to the unit installed on jail premises. "We have decided to depute two to three staff to take care of aerobic bins. The manure generated from bins could be used for farming purpose in prison compound," said A Sasikumar, health officer, city corporation.

The dairy unit at the prison also generates manure for agriculture purpose, but the officials said that owing to growing need for more manure aerobic bins are being installed.
