BANSWARA: More than a year after Prime Minister Narendra Modi gave a directive to accelerate the rail linking project at Banswara, a half constructed overbridge, uncompleted earth work, dumped material at the site and a railway office with no work are the only remains of this 2011 project here.

"The project is on freeze because of the financial constraints of the state government. The state government, which was expected to shell out Rs 1,700 crore along with some Rs 600 crore for land, has actually only paid about Rs 250 crore as yet," said A K Gupta, chief engineer (construction II), North Western Railway (NWR).

The estimated cost of the entire line, which was to be completed in five years, was Rs 2,400 crore and is believed to have inflated to over Rs 3,000 crore.
